Kathy Stacey (Piano & Cello)
Hailing originally from Cheshire, England, Kathy is a seasoned music educator with over 25 years of experience teaching children and adults. Her musical journey began at the age of nine when she delved into the realms of cello and piano, studying at the esteemed Royal College of Music in London. During her time there, Kathy had the privilege of performing in numerous concerts, including memorable collaborations with renowned artists like John Williams and Placido Domingo, as well as captivating performances for Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana.
After relocating to Canada, Kathy established and directed her own music school and piano studio in Nanaimo, BC for an impressive fifteen years. This vibrant institution touched the lives of over 160 children each week, offering private lessons in piano, voice, strings, guitar, choir, and musical theatre. In addition, Kathy's creation, the Music 'n' More Preschool Music Programs, brought the magic of music to children aged 12 months to 6 years. Kathy's dedication to music extended beyond conventional teaching, as she also provided music lessons as part of rehabilitation programs for brain-injured adults through Bill's Place Support Services. She engaged in music therapy for children with autism and visually impaired children with cerebral palsy through the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children's Health.
Kathy's talent and passion for music led her to serve as the assistant principal cellist in the Vancouver Island Symphony orchestra for nine years. She also held the role of Education Consultant for the VI Symphony for five years, curating educational materials for the Children's Education Concert Series in schools. As a guest artist, Kathy graced the stage with the Vancouver Island Symphony in 1999 alongside the Celtic-rock band, The Bremen Town Musicians.
In more intimate settings, Kathy enchanted audiences at the birthday party of Microsoft CEO Bill Gates in 1999 and performed as the cello soloist in the stage production of "Lies & Legends - A tribute to Harry Chapin" at the Belfry Theatre in Victoria, BC during the Summer of 2000. Furthermore, Kathy's dedication to Celtic music led her to teach Celtic cello at the annual Celtic Festival 'Celtfest' from 2000 to 2008, sharing her expertise with musicians from across North America and beyond.
With the cherished role of a mother to four children, Kathy infuses her teaching with a nurturing and empathetic approach. Her journey as an educator began in Victoria in 2008 when she took on the position of music specialist and instrumental teacher at Christ Church Cathedral School in Victoria, BC. More recently, Kathy's passion for shaping young minds led her to embrace the role of a music teacher at Discovery School as well. Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to professional growth, she enthusiastically engages in workshops, masterclasses, and diverse educational avenues, continually enriching her teaching skills. Through her stewardship of 'The Music Box,' Kathy has adeptly guided her students, ensuring their success in festivals, exams, and mesmerizing performances.
Beyond her role as an educator, Kathy continues to pursue her musical passions as a session musician, performing professionally as part of the cello and guitar duo 'Ten Strings & a Bow,' as well as a soloist. Her cello work has graced numerous albums, adding her unique touch to a diverse range of musical creations. With her wealth of experience, unwavering dedication, and commitment to fostering musical growth, Kathy Stacey is a pillar of the music community, enriching the lives of students and audiences alike.
Gabe Lagos (Piano)
Gabe is a talented Latin-Canadian musician based in the vibrant city of Victoria, BC, Canada. With a versatile skill set as a pianist, composer, music director, recording artist, and piano teacher, Gabe has made a notable impact in the local music scene and beyond.
During his academic journey at the University of Victoria, Gabe had the privilege of accompanying the esteemed UVic Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Their harmonious melodies graced stages across the region, including a remarkable performance at the renowned DeMiero Jazz Festival in Everett, WA, USA. While Gabe's primary focus lies in the realm of piano, he has also lent his musical talents to various bands, captivating audiences throughout beautiful British Columbia.
As a composer, Gabe has showcased his creative prowess through his three symphonic movements, seamlessly woven together in his captivating "Summer Suite." He took on the roles of Music Composer and Music Director for the original vaudevillian musical, "Divine Providence," written by the talented Corin Wrigley. Additionally, Gabe composed the theme and music for "Little Bird," a heartfelt production featuring lyrics and script also penned by Corin Wrigley. His diverse repertoire extends to include captivating piano solos, folk, rock, pop, classical, jazz, and rap songs, showcasing his versatility as both a composer and arranger.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Gabe is renowned for his kind-hearted nature and warm demeanor. Collaborating with him is an experience filled with positivity and camaraderie. Gabe's passion for music and genuine love for his craft shine through in every project and interaction.
Gabe Lagos is thrilled to share his exceptional talents with the students at The Music Box music school, bringing his expertise, creativity, and infectious enthusiasm to inspire and guide aspiring musicians on their own musical journeys.
Sarah Weston (Piano)
Sarah is a passionate music enthusiast whose joy lies in sharing the transformative power of music with her students. Her own musical journey began at the age of eight when she first laid her hands on the piano, and ever since, music has been an integral part of her life. Sarah firmly believes that the fundamental principles of music extend beyond the realm of melodies and notes, shaping and enriching all aspects of life.
With over a decade of experience as a piano teacher, Sarah has found immense fulfillment in guiding beginners on their musical path. She possesses a unique talent for improvisation, seamlessly blending classical techniques with her own creative expressions. This ability allows her to foster a sense of artistic freedom and exploration in her students, encouraging them to embrace their individuality as musicians.
Sarah's musical talents extend beyond the piano. She has also made notable contributions as a violinist, lending her skills to various productions, including memorable performances in renowned productions such as "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Te Deum" by Arvo Pärt. Additionally, Sarah's passion for learning led her to expand her skills as a respected sheet metal tradeswoman, showcasing her dedication and versatility.
Joining The Music Box piano studio fills Sarah with great excitement as she continues to inspire students with her infectious love for music. With her guidance and unwavering support, she aims to ignite a lifelong passion for music in her students, empowering them to explore their creativity and discover the transformative power of music.
